Pilates vs yoga: which is better for you?

A question often asked.

Both workouts are popular and beneficial for your health, but which is better?

It depends on your goals.

In an article on the netdoctor site yoga instructor Donna Noble and Pilates instructor Olivia Brooks speak about the differences and benefits of each.

New Timetable

Please take time to look at the new timetable. Some of the classes have now reverted back to the hour period, but I have still left the 30 min class option if that is what you have come to prefer. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ATTEND THE STUDIO. All classes still have the ZOOM option.

As soon as possible I will need you to message/call me and request your preferred class from August. I will then adjust pre-payments accordingly.

!! Class Announcement !!

What a week! What a year!

We are entering into a period of time that none of us have ever experienced in our lives. Throughout the week, like you all, I have been on what can only be described as an emotional rollercoaster.

Like everyone else in my profession I am now having to make the devastating decision to temporarily close classes. The last class will be Friday 20 March at 11am. It literally breaks my heart, but the most important thing is that you all stay safe and healthy.

I can’t tell you how long this is going to last, but I am going to keep in contact with you all over the coming weeks. I am putting my positive head on and have plans to become a virtual ‘Jo Roberts’ offering online classes. This is all new to me so have patience and within the next couple of days I will be able to tell you more.
I am going to miss you all so much and want to thank you for all your ongoing support and commitment. I pray we all come to the end of this healthy and discussing what box set was the most entertaining.

With all my love

Jo xx

CORONAVIRUS - Suspension of Tuesday Standing Pilates Classes

Because of the latest government guidance in respect of people in high risk groups, including people over the age of 70, it has been necessary for me to suspend the Tuesday 12.15 Standing Pilates Classes until further notice.
Please check this information page for future announcements concerning the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.

It now seems that this outbreak is going to intensify over the coming weeks. To minimise the risk to everybody attending my classes it is essential that we take all possible steps to minimise the possibility of contagion.

  • I would ask that from now everybody brings a personal towel or other form of cover for the exercise mat to reduce the risk of contact transfer between clients.
  • Hot water washing facilities and soap are available and you are requested to use these before and after exercising.
  • If you are exhibiting any symptoms, such as a dry cough, fever or breathing problems, please let me know and do not come to class. Government advice may soon require anybody with such symptoms to self-isolate.
  • Please also let me know if you start to exhibit such symptoms after attending a class.
  • Should you need to miss classes due to illness any prepayments will be honoured for future classes. If you decide to cancel indefinitely for any other reason, I will not be able to guarantee your space in your present class.
  • If group classes become impossible because of increased government restrictions, prepayments may be used to contribute to one-to-one sessions on favourable terms.
  • I hope that any need to suspend classes, should it arise, will be short-lived. I will assume that on resumption of classes that all allocated places will again be taken up by those who have booked them. Places will be reallocated if not taken up.
I am sure that I will be able to rely on your support in what is a difficult situation for all of us.

What can doctors do for your back pain? Not as much as you can

Guardian Article - Back Pain
Opioids don’t work. Surgery and injections rarely do, and scans are unnecessary. Better to get moving.

These are the views of Ranjana Srivastava, an Australian oncologist, as expressed in an article in the Guardian.
And this is what one of those commenting on the article wrote:

After 3-4 months of lower back pain (disk or pinched nerve) involving chiro, physio, inversion table, stretches, and pain killers - all without success - I saw a fitness trainer on Youtube who said a lot of back pain can be traced to weak glutes because of our sedentary lifestyle, which affects our posture and the load on our backs.

He outlined a series of glute and lower back exercises which within a week or two had me back to normal. I've kept them up, and since then there were a few times when I did something and felt that familiar twinge - but it is only momentary and then all is OK.

Exercise works.

Thank you & Merry Christmas

Just want to say a HUGE thank you to all the lovely people that come to my classes. Your support and dedication is always appreciated. Have a fabulous Christmas and enjoy the rest. See you in 2020!!!
